    Found in: Tropical Warm Ocean (saltwater)

    The largest confirmed individual had a length of 12.65 m (41.50 ft) and a weight of more than 21.5 metric tons (47,000 lb), commonly feeds on plankton and small fish.

    Characteristics are giant rays with 3m long and 5 m wingspan, weighing 1500 kg. Cartilaginous fish with lozenge, wide and large with a pair of flexible fleshy projections (cephalic fins) beside eyes orpo c, which seem horns and their main function to direct power to the mouth, which is located in the anterior part of the body and is provided with small teeth bent backwards. It has black and brown color on the back and white on the belly.
    Habitat warm ocean and coastal waters.

    Geographic distribution
    It is very common in Brazil, but can be found from North to South, especially in the North.

    Only young individuals have scales, quite different, which gradually disappear with age. The body is elongated and fusiform. The main feature, which gives it its name, is the extension of the upper jaw, like a longsword. Another feature is a keel on the caudal peduncle fin. The color is bluish or brownish gray on the upper body or whitish brown and clear bottom. Reaches about 4.5 m total length and 600kg.

    Fish leather, large. It is characterized by a large head, heavily ossified, with a bony plate located before the dorsal fin. It is one of the most colorful fish leather from Amazon. Its color is very beautiful, and the greenish-brown back, yellowish sides and a whitish belly. The dorsal and caudal fins are orange. Can reach more than 1.50 m in total length and more than 50kg.

    Occurs in the channel of rivers, wells after the rapids, floodplains and flooded forests, including the tributaries of black and clear waters, and reaching the headwaters of the Amazon estuary. It feeds on fish, seafood and crabs. Has a reputation for attacking humans, especially children.

    Type heavy equipment with lines 30 to 50 lb. The hooks are the most frequently used point 8/0 the 14/0, because of the wide mouth pirarara.

    Finfish. There are several genera that are called pacu. The body is quite high and compressed; the shape is rounded or oval; head and mouth are small; have a serrated pre-ventral fin. The teeth are strong, sharp or molariforms arranged in one or two rows on both jaws. In some species, the first ray of the dorsal fin is a thorn. The scales are small, giving a silvery appearance. The coloration varies from species to species, but are usually clear and may present different colored spots on body and fins. The size varies depending on the kind of 15-30 cm.

    In general the species are herbivorous, feeding on algae and plant material, with a tendency to frugivorous. Some species can be found in rivers, lakes and flooded forest, in other pedrais and rapids. Are important in subsistence fishing. At Amazon, M. duriventre (pacu-common) form shoals and down the rivers to spawn, being important in the local commercial fishing.

    Equipment light / medium type; lines 10-14 lb .; small sinker; small hooks. Fishing beat, we use bamboo pole with line 25 to 30 lb. and hooks up to the No. 5/0. baits Natural baits such as fruits / seeds, filamentous algae and worm.
