If truly saving for the FishAO Rod you need to add Bob at 10 coins a week and Herb for a few a week into the equation also add referrals as you get a coin each time they level up.
They can get a Rod sooner

My journey for free fishao rod:
I'm having 1400 fish-coins.
I'm playing for ~ 240 days( fish line level 1, money tree level 2).
My current level is 154 most of the time bamboo and dough.

I won't talk on the early days when it was easy to get more coins ( if I was starting today I probably won't save the coins because of the line level issue).
In a good week if you are level 120 character you will get at least 33 coins.
If you planning to play long time good thing to do is to invest on money tree, I will do it after I will get my free Fishao rod.

For the 1 million dollar question:
Why I'm free player and don't invest real money in Fishao ?
1. Just Players that bought Fishao rod with real money before the fish line update will get free upgrade to level 17 fish line.
2. I was scammed in a trade and the fishao team didn't do anything except PM ban to the other side and I didn't get my items back.
3. Achievements system was gone and now you have to do really hard missions like: equip the gold set (BTW gold statue is just for beta players), catch 800cm fish, have 300,000 points for your home, etc.)

Anyway I still love to play this game and when I will have my free rod I will be able to catch most of the fishes.

New players should note this mostly applies to players level 120 or above so LEVEL UP FAST! Nice chart Pip (I like the 2nd one best), has made me rethink my original strategy of upgrading the line first.
